Aged for 22 months in French Oak barrels and then bottled without fining or filtration, the 2017 Arietta H Block displays the aromatic and textural intensity that we have come to expect from this unique wine. A blend of 50% Cabernet Franc and 50% Merlot from Hudson Vineyards, the 2017 H Block is the twenty-third vintage produced from this volcanic outcropping in the cool climate of Carneros. The 2017 H Block evolved from three separate components: pure Cabernet Franc, pure Merlot, and a co-ferment of the two varieties. In the end, a blend of all three, in the right proportions, gave the wine created a multi-faceted depth and body.
The aromas of the 2017 H Block are immediately enticing, pure, and penetrating. Notes of white flowers, lavender, coriander, and baked blueberries—all aromatic “markers” for Cabernet Franc and Merlot—leap from the glass. As compelling as the aromas are, the real reward is in the taste. A rush of energy flows across the palate—fresh red fruits, exotic spices, even a hint of citrus and shiso leaf. With a finish lengthened and enlivened by the concentrated character of the fruit and a sheen of rich, silky tannins, the 2017 H Block is destined for a very long life.
